This game contains strong language. If you are a little bit fainthearted, don't play. And if you don't have a heart, then I don't know. Go see a doctor!
the United Nations' military meeting was under way. The main concern was about the Black Coat Military Operation. The Black Coats were making inroads on the UN's supplies, claiming that they needed it for themselves. However, they'd been leaching off the UN for months now, and the UN themselves were running low. When the UN asked for some supplies from the Black Coat Foundation, they were refused. And it had been leaked that the leader of Black Coat was planning to conquer the UN's military. You sit at the round table, listening as one of the staff directors presented some charts and graphs. He drones on about the shortage of vital supplies around the complex, such as food, water, weapons, and body armor for the soldiers. He concludes that the UN will need to fight off the Black Coats to retake their supplies.
In the Black Coat hq, stacks of guns, machine guns, and other assorted weaponry line the walls all around the general. He moves to the hangar and sees that the helicopters are ready for take off. He moves to the other hangar, and sees the myriad planes starting their engines. These are unmanned helicopters and planes, programmed to locate the UN complex and destroy it with bombs and guns. The tanks are ready to go as well. Loaded with machineguns, they will help the assault against the UN complex by destroying the fortifications around it. Finally, going to the barracks, he sees legions of muscular soldiers, all holding guns, all readying for battle or working out. He smiles as the final part of his plant stretches for miles around. The barracks were built using wood cut from oaks and pines, and the buildings stretch for about 20 square miles. Each barracks building contains roughly 250 soldiers, along with 10 officers.
The general laughs with uncontrolled glee. The UN won't even know what hit them. The entire army of his would strike at night. The UN people would be prisoners in their own complex, surrounded by Black Coat forces, just waiting for them to starve or surrender. With one last look at his compound, he moves back to his private office to rest.
The UN forces decide that the only viable way to go would be to set up a fortified area with their remaining weaponry. You were given responsibility to command the weapons. You protested that you wouldn't even know where the enemy was coming, but the administrator just smiles at you and hands you a radio. This will be used to allow communication between you and the operator. The operator is watching from the monitors and will be able to see all activity happening around you and the base. Our other soldiers will be busy combatting the ground units they throw at you. Uncertainly, you jump into the truck that will be taking you to the location of the final UN defense.
The general of the Black Coats looks in confusion at his monitors. The planes and choppers were veering off course. He taps in some controls onto his command console. Sure enough, they had been set to go toward the UN signal, but ... Major John Kellos heads the Black Coat 73rd Division's line of 5000 soldiers. They are formed in groups of 10 abreast, stretching for almost a mile behind their major. He follows the helicopters as they move through the sky, synchronizing their speed to his. They guide him to the new base of the UN. He is thinking they'll just storm the UN compound, but he realizes too late what they are headed for. War cries and bugles perforate his eardurms as UN forces pour out from their hiding places behind bushes and trees. The major drops back to mingle with his forces as bullets rain down from UN guns and gas blinds the eyes of the attacking Black Coat division. Some soldiers make it past the initial smoke and guns of the UN forces. With the help of your radio operator, you shoot them down. But, more come--and so do tanks loaded with machine guns, choppers loaded with huge wing guns, and planes with bombs. And that's where the game begins!
OK, are we done? good. Now I want to say that this story is available in audio form, which should be much more interesting than reading a textbook on damage extreme... Which is what you're doing. The problem is you'll die if you don't. So damn.
As you may have guessed from the story, the mission of this game is to use the base's supplies of ammo, missiles and intercepters to fend off the enemies as they attack you. Easy, you ask? Well, unfortunately for you, no. Your mother actually helped the general, so expect bad things to happen. Now, if you stopped swetting after reading this, here's how the game is going to work!
Well, you should find a game madness interactive sub menu under your start menu/programs folder. Open it up, and find the damage extreme menu. Click damage extreme from inside this menu, and you'll hear something, or nothing at all, before you reach the main menu. If you hear something and you don't care for listening to it, just press the enter or space keys to shut it up. Just don't run back to it screaming that you're sorry for doing it!
Now, you will be in a menu with 9 options in it. The first option fades out the music and starts your game. The second one will load your saved game, if you have one. Uber hp restores and all that not included. Option number 3 lets you listen to the audio form of the story line. It's probably a lot more interesting than reading this manual. Trust me on this. The fourth one will allow you to make sure your speakers are set up correctly. Run it a few times just to be sure. Because you're blind, blind people need to do everything more than once. Trying to view your top 10 scores ... well, it just doesn't work. You can choose the option as much as you want, but you'll always hear it's unavailable. The fifth option allows you to practice fighting off each kind of enemy on its own. The sixth allows you to kick back and amuse yourself with other people's failed attempts to say stuff. The seventh and 8th go hand in hand: the former allows you to view the medals you have gained and the 8th allows you to play a minigame, if you have enough medals. And the last option, but definitely not the least, well, judging by the name, will allow you to leave the field of combat and return to windows (hopefully). I mean, if you're on mac or linux, you're most likely not going to return to windows, in which case we're not calling search teams. Sorry! The last option lets you view your medals. I know, the wrong place. I'll fix it later.
The game is divided into levels, which are further divided into waves. Each time you begin a new level, you are told how many waves are in the level and how many enemies you will need to fight off in each wave. When the last enemy in a wave goes sky high, the next wave will start, unless it is the last wave of that level, when the next level will start after a little level up song. Don't worry, you will not hear lullabies or anything.
If you are in the center of the screen, things to your left will be sounding from the left side of your stereo field, and things on the right side of you will sound closer to the right. Urm, that is, if you have your speakers placed properly. If not, go fix them or just read everything backwards. Your base has 5 kinds of weapons, and 10 of each type, each positioned at different places on the base. Each separate weapon is controlled by a different key on the keyboard.
The g, t, 5, and b keys will target the weapons exactly in the center. Keys to the left of g, t, b, and 5 will use weapons positioned on the left and keys to the right will control weapons to the right of your base.
Your ammo-based weapons (shotgun and machine guns) don't have unlimited ammunition. Aww! To check the ammo in each weapon, hold left shift while pressing the weapons' firing command. To attempt to reload the weapon, hold down left control and press the weapon's firing command. You can only reload if you have 0ammo in the given weapon. Ammo is taken straight from the base, so you will hear amo counts dropping if you reload, but not if you just fire away.
Unfortunately, as with your ammo-based weapons, your base doesn't have unlimited ammo or missiles. yet again, awwwwwwwwwwwww! If your base becomes severely low on ammo or missiles (it has less than 5% of what it started with), it might be time to ask for some extra ammo from the UN. They'll give it to you, if you ask. Kindly. To ask for ammo, hold left alt and press the function key corresponding to the ammo you want to reload. Shotguns are f2, machineguns are f3, normal missiles f4, rocket missiles f5 and bomb intercepters f6. To remember this, just remember that what you use to check your ammo with left-alt will reload that same ammos stock. It will take about 30 seconds for a truck to reach your base. When it does, you'll hear it loading its contents into the base and then drive away. Unfortunately, the UN only have 1 truck to spare, so you must wait till the truck gets back to base before you call for more ammo of another weapon. Such is life. And death. And damage extreme. And other crap. This means that you should be careful about not wasting ammo in your weapons or use your ammo in such a way that you don't run out of more than 1 type at a time. Oh boy, just lie down on the keyboard... it should *not* work.
The function keys act as the status console on your base. The UN status... Wonder if the games on that console will be accessible?
These guys managed to break through the UN soldier lines and are now trying to shoot the base's fortifications down. They just march in place. Show them who's boss by taking them out with your shotguns. One hit should do them a miracle of good. If you don't, a miracle of bad will be done to you.
Your machine gun should come in handy against these miseries. You know that it's a tank because of the loud tankish noise they make. shoot the machine gun at them and if you score a hit, you'll hear the bullet hit metal. 6 or 7 shots should turn them into glass shards outside. Be aware though, that they move from left to right, and then turn and move the other way.
Use your normal missiles to blow these guys higher than the sky. If you score a hit on one, it will first activate its thrusters and then move around like crazy. When the thrusters turn off, shoot at it again, and the next time you hit it, it will be gone. Their wing guns can be a real pest though.
These guys don't play around. They move quickly from left to right to left as the tanks do, but hover when they reach the screen's sides. Also, they drop bombs. Bombs fall from the position of the helicopter; you know they are falling because you hear a loud sound getting louder. The bombs fall straight down, so if it started right at the center of your screen, you could shoot at its position with 5, and then t, then g, and then b. However, to intercept the bomb, you must shoot at its position by holding the left alt key and pressing the correct key coresponding to where the bomb is. If the bomb stops making noise, it's gone. If it falls on your base, you lose a lot of health. And ego. And pride.
Items make a loud beepy noise and move quickly from left to right on the screen as the tanks do. Catch them with your rocket powered missiles. If you don't catch them in time, they blow sky high, as that beeping noise was a small time bomb set to go off. Damn, so there are terrorists in this game too?
Items may give you bonus ammo or missiles, or extra health. They may also have just been distractions set by the enemy, in which case they will give you nothing. Ah well.
Besides ammo, you can also get some special items. One of them, a shield, protects you from all forms of damage for a given time depending on difficulty level. Press tab to activate it, and press f9 to see how many you have.
You may also be quite fortunate enough to get a smart bomb. The smart bomb destroys everything that is left of the current wave. You can activate it with the space bar. It may come in handy if you are being beaten down by a whole bunch of enemies. Press f9 to see how many you have left. And, don't ask about dumb bombs - they're tood umb to know to actually exist.
You remember that, in the story, the UN guys gave you a radio? Well, the radio operator isn't going to leave you in the dark. He will alert you about enemy attacks, complement you on destroying enemies, warn you about when your health is low and such. Though you will never absolutely need the radio, it can come in really useful when you are being beset by a whole bunch of enemies, as he can pick out enemies that you must destroy now and tell you your base will be destroyed without you ever pressing the f1 key. And it's the perfect thing to have to play some heavy metal as you play...
Luckily, you and your operator aren't the only ones at the base. Other technicians and mechanical engineers are working to repair your base. Every minute or so, your base will be repaired about 40 or 50 points (it starts at 400), and your operator will tell you about it. The repair crew can really help you, especially if your base is really not doing well.
F12 is the secret savior key. It turns on some some nice drummish music, shuts down all the enemies, shuts down your base and all its functions, and allows you to take a break. Press f12 to stop your hallucinations of peaceful coexistence between you and the Black Coats and reenter the real world of combat. I know, you were hoping for something optimistic, were you not? None of that here.
If you have other things to do (such as another life besides gaming), press left alt-f12 to save your game. You will be returned to the main menu. And don't get any not-so-bright ideas about giving yourself 5000000000 health. I've made sure to circumvent that issue. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha... Coughcough, excuse me.
If you are lucky, you may stumble on ways to gain medals of honor or shame. By doing different things in the game, you may get a medal. The more medals you have, the better. The medals will unlock stuff, like minigames, cheats or whatever else I can think up. There's a medals option in the main menu which lets you view your wall that has medals on it. Press enter to listen to a medal's accompanying audio, and press space to see the total number you have.
I would like to thank the following people for their help in developing the game
Without you, I'd probably be using VW paul! Though granted it's not a bad voice.
Without these guys, I probably would have scrapped this project. Really. They kept me going, and provided me with sounds in some cases. And alot of sounds at that.
And last, but 100% certainly not least, BGT, created by Philip Bennefall. Gotta say, you've done an awesome job with BGT. Without BGT, none of my games would be possible! 3 cheers.
